Below, learn more about Lindsey and her CSU experience!

Tell us how you got here! Why did you choose CSU?

I spent my first year of college in Gunnison, Colorado. The town was unfortunately not the best fit for me, as it was very cold, isolated, and there wasn’t much to do. I was struggling mentally and ended up transferring here. CSU has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Fort Collins has so much to do. Plus, it is far enough away from Denver to have a smaller town feel but close enough to have plenty of opportunities in the surrounding areas.

The academics here have allowed me to grow, and I’ve been able to participate in so many opportunities! I did Marching Band my first semester, where I met so many new people and made many friends. I’m in the Symphonic Band as a euphonium player, and have been able to foster my love for music. I’m also interning for Greyrock Review, as well as TAing for two of Dr. Devon Fulford’s courses. CSU has so many different avenues for different people. I would choose CSU over and over again.

What do you love about your major?

I have always had a passion for English, both creatively and as a language. Growing up, I’d never put down books. I’ve been writing, in some form, for as long as I can remember. I love how I am able to be creative and learn more about creative writing while also strengthening practical writing skills and learning more about the linguistic aspects of English. The best part about this major is its applicability. I may be having fun every day, but I’m also learning skills that will help me in my career.

What classes have you enjoyed? Any favorites you’d like to shout-out?

I have loved all the English classes here at CSU. Even the “boring” classes end up being fun. You truly cannot go wrong.

What kind of opportunities have you been involved in? What did you gain from the experience(s)?

I’m currently interning for Greyrock Review as the Managing Editor. This has been very helpful because I want to pursue copywriting after graduation. My dream would be to copywriter for a publishing company someday.

I’m also a teaching assistant for two classes taught by Dr. Devon Fulford: CO150 College Composition and CO301A Writing in the Disciplines: Humanities. This experience has driven me to go outside my comfort zone and be more social towards people so that I can answer any questions they may have about class.

As a student representative for the Undergraduate English Committee, I have been able to bring my student perspective to the committee and advocate for undergrads. I’ve also been able to help run the English Studies Possibilities Fair with our other student representative, which was great for community building as well as enhancing my project management and outreach skills. This also gave me the opportunity to meet with many of the resource centers on campus.

Lastly, as mentioned before, I was in the CSU Marching Band, and I am now in Symphonic Band. This has allowed me to meet a diverse range of students from different majors. I love helping create music with other people who are passionate.

As an English major, what skills have you gained that will help you beyond college?

I have become a very good communicator. I’m less afraid to advocate and network for myself. Majoring in English has made me a much more well-rounded person in general. I love learning new things and being able to connect them to completely separate aspects of my life.

What’s your favorite thing about the CSU English community?

Everyone is so friendly and passionate.

If you could go back, what advice would you give yourself as a high school senior deciding on a major or college?

Don’t be afraid to choose English! On the surface, you may not know all the doors it can open, but an English major can extend to so many aspects of life and different career paths.

Looking ahead to post-grad life, what career path are you interested in pursuing? What excites you about the future?

Copywriting—I am so excited to get to write every day and let my words connect to people. I’m also excited to continue my poetry post-grad. I love writing!
