The TEFL/TESL graduate program will host its first and only Brown Bag Series event for this fall semester on Friday, November 7, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m in Natural Resources, Room 108.

The session will be led by Professor Gerald Delahunty, a faculty member in the Department of English specializing in linguistics.

About the Talk

Ideology and the Language of Human Rights: Language, Text, and Ideology in Amnesty International Appeal Letters

Professor Delahunty will examine how the language used in Amnesty International’s reports, webpages, and appeals reflects underlying beliefs and values—what scholars call ideology. Using tools from linguistic and discourse analysis, he will explore how everyday language choices, such as tone, structure, and word use, shape the way human rights issues are presented and understood. The presentation will show that even organizations devoted to justice and liberation rely on language that carries its own assumptions and persuasive power.

About the Series

The TEFL/TESL Brown Bag Series offers an open, collegial space for students and faculty to share ideas and engage in conversation about language-related topics. Designed to be both intellectually stimulating and relaxed, the series also provides opportunities for students to develop professionally—whether through presenting their work, learning from peers and faculty, or exploring new perspectives in the field.

Brown “lunch” bags will be provided, typically packed with some snacks, a beverage, and a special surprise. But we also encourage you to bring a snack for yourself (or everyone!) to enjoy during/after the session.

The session is open to anyone interested in the topic. If you have any questions, feel free to contact program director Tony Becker at Anthony.Becker@colostate.edu.
