Literature Program Research Spotlight Talk by Professor Barbara Sebek

When

Reimagining Medea, With and Without Shakespeare

This talk explores a model of literary adaptation and appropriation that accommodates putting Luis Alfaro’s character Medea (from Mojada: A Medea in Los Angeles, 2013) into an adaptational “rhizome” with William Shakespeare’s character Miranda (from The Tempest, 1611).

Professor Sebek specializes in early modern British literature. Her most recent publication is “Interrogating Genre: Domestic Tragedy, Closet Drama, and the case of Elizabeth Cary’s The Tragedy of Mariam, Fair Queen of Jewry,” in a special issue of Studies in the Literary Imagination on “Death and Domesticity.”
