The Center for Literary Publishing, or CLP, at Colorado State University has been awarded a $10,000 Art Works grant to support national and regional publications in 2020.

The grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, or NEA, will fund the publication of two issues of the national literary journal Colorado Review. It will also support the November publication of a new title in the Mountain/West Poetry Series: Dears, Beloveds, by Kevin Phan.

“We are so very grateful to the NEA,” said CLP Director Stephanie G’Schwind. “This funding helps us achieve our mission to form dynamic partnerships with writers, to bring readers excellent literature through various platforms and to invite interns to participate in all aspects of publishing these works.”

Phan’s collection offers a meditation on grief — personal, familial, ecological, and political. Reflecting on the bodily loss of his cancer-stricken mother, the Black Lives Matter movement, or a shadow falling from a speck of dust in the kitchen, these poems are notable for their crisp and surprising movements, aching tenderness, and humanity, G’Schwind said.

Phan, a Northern Colorado resident, is a graduate of the University of Iowa and the Helen Zell Writers’ Program at the University of Michigan. Poems from this collection, his first, have appeared in the Georgia Review, Gulf Coast, Prairie Schooner and the Cincinnati Review among other publications.

“The arts are at the heart of our communities, connecting people through shared experiences and artistic expression,” said Arts Endowment chairman Mary Anne Carter. “The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support projects like the Center for Literary Publishing.”

The Art Works funding category supports projects that focus on public engagement with, and access to, various forms of excellent art across the nation; the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence; learning in the arts at all stages of life; and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life.

The NEA has approved 1,187 grants totaling $27.3 million in the first round of fiscal year 2020 funding, supporting arts projects in every state as well as District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
